With 20 cars and 40 drivers from 5 different nationalities, TCR South America opened the biggest event in its history in Termas de Río Hondo

Termas de Río Hondo, August 25, 2022 – The start of the TCR South America tour of Argentina anticipates the greatest show in the short history of the category. This Thursday, in a two-hour collective test at Termas de Río Hondo, the 40 registered riders began the second Endurance 2022 date.

There are multiple attractions: the world launch of the Toyota Corolla TCR, the presence of four regular WTCR drivers (among them the Spanish Mikel Azcona, who leads the championship), five different nationalities with the debut of Chile, eight brands and the start of the end of the 2022 season.

The scenario could not be better. The modern circuit of Termas de Río Hondo that was highly praised by the pilots after the free training session this Thursday.

There were two hours of session, marked by the toggle at the top of the timing screen. The first to register fast laps was the Alfa Romeo Giulietta #14, owned by Argentines Matías Cravero and Martín Chialvo. Halfway through the session, the #77 CUPRA of Raphael Reis and Bernardo Llaver took the lead, later being overtaken by the #35 Hyundai Elantra of Pedro Aizza and Azcona. Another that passed through the lead was the #26 Honda of Juan Ángel Rosso and Ricardo Risatti and towards the end Azcona again recorded a fast lap, imposing a difference of more than a second over the second place.

At the end of the session, the top 5 remained: the #35 Hyundai, the #77 CUPRA, the #26 Honda, the #17 CUPRA, owned by Alceu Feldmann and Matías Milla, and the #7 Lynk & Co, owned by the championship leader, Fabricio Pezzini and his compatriot Carlos Okulovich. The rookie Toyota Corolla, with Thiago Camilo and Jorge Barrio, finished the session with a respectable seventh time, just 0.067s from the top 5.

This Friday there will be two more training sessions. The classification will be disputed on Saturday, with the sum of the best laps of each pilot of the crews. Sunday will be the time of the race with a duration of 33 laps or 60 minutes, with a mandatory pit stop window to change two tires and drivers.

STATEMENTS

“We arrived with high expectations, it is the first time that we put our Corolla TCR on the track against rivals and the day was very fruitful to check how it works. It was also important that Thiago Camilo knew more about the car because he had only done one test before. In today’s training we have obtained good references, although in this type of activity each one has a different set of tires. Now it’s time to analyze the data and the behavior of the car to start the official schedule.”
Darío Ramonda, head of Toyota Gazoo Racing

“I had a good feeling, the car was brilliant from the first lap. With each start we thought about improving even more with the team. It was a great evolution work and the last lap was perfect.”
Mikel Azcona

“I have expectation of victory because I am very well accompanied. Azcona is currently the best TCR driver in the world. We will work to take my first victory”.
Pedro Aizza

“It is a very important event for us, the best we have had so far in the history of TCR South America. There are 20 cars, 40 drivers and 4 WTCR drivers, plus many nationalities. Our expectations are high for the event and it shows us that we are on the right track.”
Federico Punteri, CEO of TCR South America
